In most countries, the game is played between single-sex sides, although it can be played by mixed-sex sides. In the United States and Canada it is played predominantly by women.

The 116-member governing body is the International Hockey Federation (FIH). Field Hockey has been played at each summer Olympic Games since 1908 (except 1924). Modern field hockey sticks are J-shaped and constructed of a composite of wood, glass fibre or carbon fibre (sometimes both) and have a curved hook at the playing end, a flat surface on the playing side and curved surface on the rear side.

There are 4000-year-old drawings in Egypt of a game resembling field hockey being played. While modern field hockey appeared in the mid-18th century in England, primarily in schools, it was not until the first half of the 19th century that it became firmly established. The first club was created in 1849 at Blackheath in south-east London.

CRICKET

Cricket is a bat-and-ball sport contested by two teams, usually of eleven players each.^[1] A cricket match is played on a grass field, roughly oval in shape, in the centre of which is a flat strip of ground 22 yards (20.12 m) long, called a cricket pitch. A wicket, usually made of wood, is placed at each end of the pitch.

The bowler, a player from the fielding team, bowls a hard, fist-sized cricket ball from the vicinity of one wicket towards the other. The ball usually bounces once before reaching the batsman, a player from the opposing team. In defence of the wicket, the batsman plays the ball with a wooden cricket bat. Meanwhile, the other members of the bowler's team stand in various positions around the field as fielders, players who retrieve the ball in an effort to stop the batsman scoring runs, and if possible to get him or her out. The batsman — if he or she does not get out — may run between the wickets, exchanging ends with a second batsman (the "non-striker"), who has been waiting near the bowler's wicket. Each completed exchange of ends scores one run. Runs are also scored if the batsman hits the ball to the boundary of the playing area. The match is won by the team that scores more runs.

Cricket has been an established team sport for hundreds of years and is one of the most popular sports in the world. It originated in its modern form in England and is most popular in the present and former members of the Commonwealth. In the countries of South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, cricket is the most popular sport. It is also a major sport in England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean, which are collectively known in cricketing parlance as the West Indies. There are also well-established amateur club competitions in countries such as the Netherlands, Kenya, Nepal and Argentina.

The sport is followed with passion in many different parts of the world. It has occasionally given rise to diplomatic outrage; notoriously the Basil D'Oliveira affair (which led to the banning of South Africa from sporting events) and the Bodyline series, played between England and Australia in the early 1930s (which led to a temporary deterioration in relations between the two countries).

CORAL THREAT

It is a country with some of the world's richest coral reefs, but scientists fear many of Indonesia's psychedelic reefs, already significantly damaged by blast fishing and pollution, now face an even graver threat: global warming.
Over the years, rising sea temperatures have led to severe coral bleaching in some of the most spectacular reefs off the palm-fringed islands of Sulawesi and Bali that are home to exotic fish like the brightly coloured clown fish and scorpion fish.
And environmentalists say if quick steps are not taken to stop the destruction, many reefs across the sprawling archipelago of about 17,000 islands could disappear in the next few decades.
The state of coral around the world will be part of the discussions at next month's United Nations climate talks on the Indonesian resort island Bali, where about 190 countries will gather to try to hammer out a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, a global pact aimed at fighting global warming.

WANNA FEED FISH?

It’s hard to think wild fish can be partly domesticated, but that is exactly what is happening in the waters off Maui and around Hawaii. Various kinds of fish are becoming habituated to being hand-fed.
The habituated fishes swarm snorkelers and divers and can get aggressive enough to actually bite the hands that don’t feed. Mostly the fishes are being fed junk food – frozen peas, corn, pizza crusts and cheese spread – although there are shops that sell special fish food pellets that contain proper piscine nutrition.
The reason behind the fish-feeding is customer satisfaction, even at the expense of the wildlife and the reefs. Less-than-responsible guides on snorkel and dive tours feed the fishes to keep the customers satisfied.
With unreasonable expectations born of watching television programs showing swarms of fish, the customers want a bigger-than-life journey into the sea. What the viewers of those programs don’t realize is that the photographers often spend days, weeks and even years to get those spectacular shots. A National Geographic team had to return to Midway several years in a row to get one shot that would take a couple of minutes to show.

Great Barrier Reef: Scuba Diving Adventures

This is one of the true wonders of the world and also the world’s biggest structure that can be seen from outer space. I am talking about the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, whose beauty cannot be imagined unless experienced personally. Made of 2600 different reefs, it is around 2000 km long. It starts just south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Dating back to around 18 millions years ago, the Great Barrier Reef was declared as a World Heritage Area in 1981. This was primarily due to the spectacular beauty of the place and even because it supports a wide diversity of life, which includes many vulnerable or even, endangered species.
The name of this reef was derived because it is an outer reef that reaches a depth of about 60m. It is situated along the Australian continental shelf with the channel between the coastlines. The Great Barrier Reef is composed of composed of billions of coral polyps. These tiny organisms help in supporting the entire system of the reef. The corals on the reef, date back to millions of years ago. The polyps keep multiplying and their skeletons turn white when they are completely dead. The survival of the polyps is very important for the sustenance of the reefs. The corals need an environment that is conducive for them to survive. Various factors such as the temperature of the water, the salinity and even the depth of the water, count in their survival. Today there are nearly 400 types of coral in this reef. This area is also rife with plenty of species of fish and other sea creatures.

ECO COOLER

Economical and Environmentally Friendly

The Eco Cooler is environmentally friendly and economical and can be used for both salt and fresh water aquariums. The principle of the Eco Cooler borrows its technology from water cooling towers used in industrial applications.
